A Tribute to The Old Mulberry Tree

on Winchester Square

The Old Mulberry Tree

Stood tall and free

Gave us pride in our history

I was truly sad to see it go

The Old Mulberry Tree

Lived a country life

With cows and a windmill – a beautiful sight

A restful shade and a peaceful place

Here on the south plains rugged face

The Old Mulberry Tree

No longer stood alone

For our city lights grew to its home

Bright street lights and a parking lot

United we grew to a shopping cart

The Old Mulberry Tree

No longer here

Was taken away by age and years

Split in half by a lightning bolt

Could not hold together with such a jolt

* So on April 12, 1996 it lost its life

It stood 104 years – through ice storms, tornadoes, sand storms,

summer rains, lightning and two World Wars, but progress and old age took its toll *

The Old Mulberry Tree

Now that’s its gone

Has fallen away to history

The Old Mulberry Tree

That once stood tall and free

Is now only left to memories
